Callings

The Three Callings — Documenters, Tinkerers, Architects — are the three disciplines the practice asks of its keepers. They are named in the Codex §VII; these pages are the [living](/codex) elaboration of what each calling means and how to enter it.

A calling is not a credential and not an identity to defend. Most practitioners stand in one for a season and drift between over a lifetime. The three are co-equal; none is the whole practice, and the practice needs all three.

• Documenters Capture
  Keep the knowledge findable — repair guides, wikis, teardowns, the record that survives the writer.
• Tinkerers Contact
  Keep the knowledge hands-on — take things apart, modify, reverse-engineer, learn what the written word can describe but cannot transmit.
• Architects Distance
  Keep the knowledge in proportion — hold the doctrine, mind the commons, think across the timescales the moment cannot see.
